The infamous 'bare island', once the top-secret political prison known as the Croatian Alcatraz (1949 to the 1980s). Today the ruins are an eerie open-air museum, with a summer tavern, a tourist train and swimming off the pebble coves.

Guided tours explain the prison history on site. Wear real shoes: the island is bare karst, and the summer sun is fierce.
